The AFL Commission is set to make a decision on which city will host this year’s Grand Final, with many expecting Queensland to reap the rewards of their $200m role in saving the season.

The announcement will not be formally made until Wednesday, but some media outlets are reporting it is considered “almost certain” the Gabba will hold a 7pm Grand Final on October 24.

The iconic Woolloongabba stadium faces competition from NSW, SA and WA, with Victoria seemingly out of the running given the COVID-19 situation.

The Herald Sun is reporting the Gabba would host a “historic night grand final” in front of 30,000 and Adelaide and Perth clubs could host games through to the preliminary final if the Commission accepts a recommendation handed down by the AFL executive.

Speaking on Fox Sports’ AFL Tonight, Herald Sun reporter Jon Ralph said Brisbane would host the AFL Grand Final on Saturday, October 24th with a 7pm kick-off.

“It would be a jaw-dropping upset, one of massive proportions, if it was not the Gabba … I would be flummoxed if that was not the venue,” Ralph said.

“All of those bids will be weighed and Travis Auld’s recommendation will go to the AFL Commission. They make their own mind, sometimes they can make weird decisions but I’ll tell you what, every single figure in the AFL and clubland that I’ve canvassed today says that bid just stacks up.

“I can confirm tonight that the decision has been made that Port Adelaide and West Coast will still be able to play (preliminary finals) in their home states.”

CEO Gillon McLachlan is expected to fly to Brisbane on Wednesday for an official announcement.

Queensland all but saved the season after the code was forced to move from Victoria amid a COVID-19 second wave.

Tourism Minister Kate Jones said an AFL Grand Final would deliver “great benefits” for the state.

“Delivering events that will pump millions of dollars into our economy and support local jobs is an important part of the government’s economic recovery strategy to rebuild our tourism industry,” she said.

“The fact that Queensland has played such a strong role in ensuring the AFL season is able to continue has put us in good stead.”
