There’s been a dramatic drop in the use of methamphetamine in Western Australia as drug smugglers struggle to get past the state’s hard border, and now there’s a warning addicts are turning to a deadly alternative – homebake heroin.

Now in drug rehabilitation, reformed drug addict Krystal Van Alphan has seen a lot of things, but the mother-of-three said she’s never seen Perth’s drug economy like this.

“I’ve seen a lot of my friends swap from speed to heroin,” she said.

Addicts are switching from uppers to downers as WA’s meth price soars to a record high, while COVID-19 travel bans have resulted in an ice shortage.
