The Demons’ season is hanging over the edge of a cliff after a baffling choke against the Sydney Swans in Cairns on Thursday night.

With everything to play for and riding the momentum of a big win over St Kilda, the Demons were embarrassed as they were beaten 10.7 (67) to 6.10 (46) by a Sydney team with nothing to play for.

The Demons’ 21-point loss left footy commentators completely sick of watching the Demons habitually drop the ball when it matters.

“Gee Melbourne can let you down and they did that again,” Channel 7’s Brian Taylor said.

Earlier, a dejected Melbourne legend Garry Lyon accepted the Demons “Don’t deserve to play finals” this season.

“This is such a Melbourne thing to be doing at the moment, as much as I hate to say it,” Lyon told Fox Footy at half time with the Demons down by 30 points.

AFL legend Dermott Brereton said Demons coach Simon Goodwin should have given his players a serve at quarter time after seeing several moments where Swans players easily shrugged off weak Melbourne tackle attempts.

Lyon also highlighted a play before half time where Demons players didn’t bother to chase a loose ball.

“Look at the Melbourne players standing – they’ve given up here. They gave up and gave up again,” he said.

“That is the worrying sign, that is right on half-time.

“They’ve got plenty to worry about, that was almost as worrying as anything.”

Goodwin admitted his club is now facing the daunting run home of needing to win all three of their remaining games to likely play finals.

They sit eighth on the ladder, but will drop out if the Giants or Bulldogs win this week.

The Demons have Fremantle, GWS and Essendon for their last games of the season.

“It’s frustration. We’re working incredibly hard as a footy club, but there’s been periods in the season where we just regress,” Goodwin said.

“We’ve got to mature. We’ve got to perform better. We can’t have games or halves where we’re non-existent.”

Nobody would disagree with him.
