Perth’s Murdoch University is looking to slash a further $25 million in salary costs from 2021, on top of $30 million savings flagged this year.

Vice-chancellor Eeva Leinonen announced the plans in an email sent to staff on Wednesday morning, just a day after Curtin University flagged mass redundancies as it looked to cut $45 million in costs.

Ms Leinonen said the scale of the challenge the university faced, stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, was even more significant, and the federal government’s higher education reforms added to the uncertainty.

She said the university had already implemented savings of $30 million in 2020 through measures such as discretionary expenditure saving, a recruitment freeze, vacancy management, a senior staff salary freeze, reviewing workload allocations, and lowering leave balances.
