The rescue helicopter has been sent to a serious head-on crash along a notorious stretch of Indian Ocean Drive, north of Perth.

The crash, which involved two four-wheel-drives, happened just before 2pm about 10km north of Old Yanchep Road at Karakin.

Major crash investigators are on their way to the scene but the full extent of the injuries of the people involved is not yet known.

Pictures from the scene show the two vehicles with severe damage to their front ends.

It appears they collided head-on at a bend in the road but the cause of the crash is yet to be determined.

Traffic is banked up in both directions with firefighters at the scene and the rescue helicopter expected to land in the area soon.

Indian Ocean Drive has gained notoriety in recent years following a series of horror head-on crashes which led to upgrades and road safety awareness campaigns.
